Game 2 - Maroon vs.
Navy
By Johnny Betts
May 14, 2002
Johnny Betts' forcefully led his team to a 22-8 shellacking of the Navy team on
Tuesday night.
"It was pretty much an all-night butt kicking. While I was certainly the star of
the game picking up two hits, reaching base four times, and knocking in three runs,
I will have to say that overall this was a very good team effort," said Johnny in his
typical unselfish manner, "It looks as if my teammates saw how high I set the bar
last week and decided to give it the 'Johnny Betts Effort.'"
The win evens Maroon's record at 1-1 on the year. With 7 games left in the season
a playoff appearance is still a possibility, and Johnny is cognizant of his team's
chances.
"We've got a couple of good teams left to play, but we've also got some creampuffs
on the schedule that we can beat handily. Plus, we have a huge weapon that the other
teams don't have - me."
The first victory of the season always has a sweet taste to it, just ask any team.
But Tuesday's victory over Navy was even sweeter for Johnny becase his boss plays
for Navy.
"He was talkin' trash all week about how they were going to beat us and blah, blah,
blah. I guess he thought I was gonna sandbag it and not play up to my potential.
Well ENH-ENH! Johnny Betts doesn't sandbag anything. I know one speed and it's
full-force. Beating your boss at anything can always be chalked up as a 'life
victory.' Sure, I had to be at work by 5:00 AM the next morning, and I seem to be
working a lot of nights this week, but I'd do it again."
And what did Stephanie think of Game 2?
"This is much better than sitting through a pounding like last week. I even looked
up from my book just long enough to watch a couple of people other than Johnny bat."
Game 3
is set for Tuesday, May 21 against Gold. The season could be turning
around. Maroon may have finally gotten the proverbial monkey off
their backs.
