Game 3 - Maroon vs. Gold
By Johnny Betts

May 21, 2002

Despite Johnny Betts' best efforts, the Maroon suffered a 19-7 defeat at the hands of the Gold on Tuesday night. The game was a lot closer than the final score indicates.

"We had them on the ropes in the 5th inning," said Johnny, "We cut the lead to 8-7 and had bases loaded with 2 outs. Unfortunately, our batter hit a line drive right to the shortstop and put an end to our rally. They added a few more runs in the 5th and 6th innings and put the game away. The worst part is even though they were the home team, they were allowed to play the bottom of the 6th and they just started to run up the score. We were expecting the game to be called, but they were allowed to keep playing. The final score should've been no worse than 15-7. But since they were allowed to bat in the bottom of the 6th, we should've been allowed to bat in the top of the 7th."

Johnny only had one hit in the game, but he had two very hard line drives to the outfield that were barely caught, including a HARD line drive in the first inning that made his boss (who was in attendance for the first inning) say, "That was a HARD hit though." But it was on the defensive end where Johnny really put on a clinic. He caught 5 fly balls, had no errors, and made some very good throws.

"I don't want to brag, but if I hadn't been playing left-center then the other team would've probably scored another 5 or 6 runs. In one inning I accounted for all three outs. I caught two fly balls and had an assist on another out. I got a grounder in the outfield and threw the ball to the pitcher who then caught the batter trying to run from first to second. I also almost threw out another guy running to second base. I was on fire."

Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to bring home the victory. With the loss, the Maroon's record drops to 1-2 on the year. There's still plenty of time to rebound though, so there's still much hope in Maroonville.

And what did Stephanie think of Game 3?

"Is there anybody other than Johnny who can play defense on the team? Goodness. It was a good game up through the 5th inning. Thankfully I had my book to sustain me once things started getting out of hand."

Game 4 is set for Tuesday, May 28.
